Flannery O'Connor's short story, Revelation, opens in a claustrophobic and crowded doctor's waiting room. That was the inspiration for this drawing.
Given current difficulties in our NHS, maybe it has some resonance now. Apart from the ashtray on the table, of course, but the story was set 70 years ago.

​After her humiliation at the hands of Mary Grace in the doctor's waiting room, Mrs Turpin returned to her farm and complained to her black women farm workers.

'"She said," Mrs Turpin began, and stopped, her face very dark and heavy. The sun was getting whiter and whiter, blanching the sky overhead so that the leaves of the hickory tree were black in the face of it. She could not bring forth the words. "Something real ugly," she muttered.'
